A Bad Habit: Nicki Minaj's persona issues.

Who is Nicki Minaj? Do we even care? Nicki Minaj is confused about who she is and guess what? We all know it. Unfortunately she won't admit it. Nicky Minaj showed up in a red nun's habit accompanied by a priest at last night's Grammy's and not only did she look like a biter, she looked uninspired. I am all for artistic and creative evolution and experimentation. However, not only did her wannabe shock value seem redundant and knock-off-ish, her lyrics were weak and her preformance seemed stunted like she wanted to go somewhere but used someone elses directions. Nicky Minaj has admitted that her first love is actually acting, not singing or rapping, so I can see why she focuses on image (acting) over substance (lyricism). Nicki Minaj also has multiple personas that she likes to use to express herself, yet the greater public in general knows very little about these characters and she doesn't seem to develop them and instead "uses" them to say or do certain things. Most of my adult life has been spent studying or working within industries where I am controlling or developing the image of my company (entertainment, non-profit) or client (young people, MC's, etc) and from this perspective I would say that Nicki Minaj is either getting bad advice or not listening to the good avice she is being given. As a woman, I root for Nicki to reach her potential in a world dominated by men. As a manager, I root for Nicki to tell the world "I don't know who the fuck I am! Rock with me while I figure it out!" And if this means admitting "Rapping pays my bills, but acting is my passion." Then so be it!
